M and M Maths

Today we did a survey of M and M packets to see how many of each colour is in a packet. We worked in groups to separate and count the M and Ms. We made tally charts to show the results and tomorrow we are going to graph the results and write statements about what we found out. We did get to taste a few after we had counted them. We took some photos of us working today.

Gardening

Today we planted some lettuces. We learnt about spacing the plants so that they were not too close together and could grow well. We had to dig a little hole and plant the lettuces, remembering to pat the soil firmly so the plant would stay in the ground. We have to water the lettuce plants every day. We picked some tomatoes and some spinach, which some of us were able to take home. We are going to take turns helping in the garden.

Pinehill's Garden

Out our window we can see the vegie garden. We have planted some climbing bean seeds and are waiting for them to grow. We planted them at the bottom of the stakes because they will climb up the stakes. We have to water them every day. How tall do you think the plants will get?

We have also been measuring the watermelon that is growing in the garden. It grew ten centimetres in a week. We were surprised that it grew so quickly. At the moment it is like a big round ball. How much do you think it will have grown this week? Charlotte took some photos of the garden for us.

Puppy Visit!

Today Austin from Room 6 brought his Nana's puppies to school to visit. Lots of the classes were able to visit them and find out about them. They were only six weeks old, and very big for their age. We were able to pat and cuddle them. They were very sleepy apart from one which kept escaping. They were chocolate labrador puppies.

Welcome to 2014!

What a great start we have made in Room 19 this year! The children have come back and are all enthusiastic about learning. This term we are learning about The Pinehill Way, Writing Memoirs, The Treaty of Waitangi, and of course the Overnight Stay.
We have a special new class member called Frosty which I am sure you have heard all about. Frosty really likes to hear the children read, and the children love reading to him!
We are looking forward to a great year of learning together in Room 19.
